10 of the Wildest Apollo Moon Landing Conspiracy Theories

Moon landing conspiracy theories have spread wider with the growth in technology and social media in modern times. When it comes to space travel, the Apollo 11 mission is the finest there is. However, many believe that the United States faked the 17 July 1969 moon landing to convince the world that they had beaten the Soviets in the space race. This idea originated from sources like Bill Kayoing’s 1978 book, “We Never Went to The Moon – America’s Thirty Billion Dollar Swindle.” It was sold during a political mistrust era of Watergate and Post-Vietnam war, among others. Other sources of the Moon landing conspiracy theories include books, documentaries, and many websites that suggest that NASA staged the lunar landings. In this list, we explore ten popular moon landing conspiracy theories that have questioned the famous moon landing.

The Waving USA Flag, Yet There is No Wind on the Moon

The Waving USA Flag, Yet There is No Wind on the Moon

The US flag that appears to be flattering in the wind paving the way for the moon landing conspiracy theories to question whether Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went to the Moon at all. There is no atmosphere on the Moon. Therefore, there is no wind – making it not only odd but also suspicious. NASA may have faked the iconic first Moon landing to impress the Americans and show the world that they are smarter than the Soviet Union. The conspiracy theorist suggests that the Apollo 11 moon landing was filmed on Earth, hence the flattering of the flag caused by a breeze which is not present on the moon. The flattering according to Sibrel, was created by indoor fans used to cool the astronauts because their spacesuit cooling system was too heavy to carry on Earth.

However, the counter-argument states that the flag was waving because Buzz and Neil made it do so. The NASA team explains that a wire was inserted in the banner to keep steady while the astronauts created the waving effect as they were planting the flag on the Moon. Hence why the flag stopped waving once the setting was completed.[1][2]

The Astronauts Could Not Have Survived Earth’s Radiation Field

The Astronauts Could Not Have Survived Earth's Radiation Field

The existence of the protective layer that guards the Earth against harmful solar radiation known as the Van Allen belts pose a dangerous threat to the Apollo mission. The Van Allen belt forms a ring around the planet that facilitate the gathering and trapping of all forms of radiation in one place to keep the world safe. The Moon Landing Conspiracy theorist argues that it is impossible for the astronauts to have passed the van Allen belt radiation without radiation poisoning when they went through the belt. The Van Allen radiation belt is made up of the inner and outer layer, with the inner layer being the most dangerous zone for radiation poisoning than the outer layer. According to conspirators, the astronaut in Apollo 11 mission could not have survived the radiation exposure from both the galactic ambient radiation and Van Allen radiation belt radiation poisoning.

The debunking team points out the argument that the radiation in the belt is indeed significant. However, the Apollo 11 was flying at high speed and passed through the belt in less than four hours, which is not enough exposure to be considered dangerous to the astronauts. The supporter of the Apollo 11 mission suggests for the exposure to be regarded as dangerous one needs to be exposed for at least a day of more.[3]

Absence of Stars in the Background of Apollo Images

Absence of Stars in the Background of Apollo Images

Scientifically, if you take the photos outside at night, it is evident that distant objects do not appear because of the brightness of the nearby objects which washes out the film. In all of the photos of NASA space mission of Apollo 11, there are no stars in the background. The Apollo 11 astronauts explained in the post-mission press that they did not recall seeing stars during the mission.

The Moon Landing Conspiracy theorist argues that NASA did exclude the stars from the photos. They claim astronomers would have used the images to determine whether the pictures were taken from the Earth or the Moon. This would have been possible through celestial position comparison and parallax to what would be expected for any observation site.[4]

Multiple Inconsistent Shadows in Photos

Multiple Inconsistent Shadows in Photos

The theory is advanced based on the photos from the moon landing of the Apollo 11 mission. The angle and color of shadow in the images are inconsistent according to the theorist. Many conspiracy theories around the moon landing claim that multiple shadows captured in the photos of different levels, angles, lengths suggest that there were numerous light sources. The theorist claim that the various shadows of varying angle and length are because the moon landing was staged in using studio lights. However, NASA experts and astrologists suggest that the varying shadows were because Buzz and Neil were snapping photos on uneven brightness, brightly lit landscape with the sun on the horizon. Therefore, the ground created a slew of varying shadows in the pictures taken.[5]

No Landing Marks or Crater at the Landing Site

There Are No Landing Marks on the Surface of the Moon: No Crater at the Landing Site

The lunar lander module weight was huge, however, with the low gravity on the Moon, which is about a sixth of the Earth’s gravity. The conspiracy theorist holds that although the weight would be reduced drastically, it would still be enough weight to cause a Crater on the landing site of the Moon. Further, the theorist wonders why and how the astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were able to leave footprints on the Moon without moisture on the ground. This thinking line has led them to conclude that the Apollo 11 mission was faked and filed from somewhere in the secret desert place on Earth or in the studio.

The counter-argument however, points out that friction enables the finely grained moon dust particles to maintain their form when shuffled around. Thus, explaining that the footprints left by astronauts are still on the Moon even today. Furthermore, NASA representatives have cited the facts that there is a layer of dense rocks on the Moon that is difficult to sustain an imprint on. This explains why the Apollo 11 mission moon landing did not leave a noticeable crater on the moon surface and the landing mark.[6]

If We Went to the Moon in 1969, Why Have We Never Been Back?

If We Went to the Moon in 1969, Why Have We Never Been Back?

The first claimed moon landing according to the doubting conspiracy theorist was by the Apollo 11 in 1969, however, since then, do you know of another space race to the Moon? Well, the last NASA mission to the Moon was Apollo 17 which took astronauts to the Moon in 1972, since then, humans have never returned to the Moon. The conspiracist holds that maybe the reason is that humans never went to the Moon in the very first place as to why there has never been a return to the Moon. According to the reports that followed the 1972 encounter, Apollo 17 was not meant to be the end of the moon space journey. The stories register ambitions to create a permanent lunar base before endeavoring to the next project of space exploration challenge, a visit to Mars. Geopolitically, this was more than a conspiracy theory.

The response that counters the argument states that Americans change their priorities because they had won the Space Race. For instance, the priorities turned to the Space shuttle program and International Space Station, which took the interest of astronaut. This does not mean that humans cannot go back to the Moon, however.[7]

No Exhaust Flame From Moon Launch

No Exhaust Flame From Moon Launch

Several moon landing conspiracy theorists have questioned why Apollo 11 mission, lunar module lacked exhaust fame while departing from the Moon. They propose the absence of exhaust flame is proof that the entire Apollo 11 mission was a model. The strings pulled it on the staged sound in a top NASA secret Hollywood film studio. The motive was there for the America-based space project to stage the mission as a success to beat the Russians to it during the cold war era. On the contrary, scholars and scientists cite that although the thinking line of the theorists is exciting, it is a lie. Scientist and experts have famously quoted the expression,” It is not rocket science to understand!” Well, this is rocket science. The Apollo 11 was launched by Saturn V rocket into orbit that combusted liquid oxygen and kerosene, the combination of the emits enormous flame and massive combustion. NASA experts disqualified this theory by highlighting that the lunar module of Apollo 11 was launched using nitrogen tetroxide and Aerozine 50, which emits transparent exhaust gases.[8]

Stanley Kubrick Filmed It

Stanley Kubrick Filmed It

The moon landing conspiracy theorist advanced the accusation of Stanley Kubrick involvement in aiding NASA to shoot most of the Apollo 11 and 12 footage. He had just directed the film A Space Odyssey in 2001. The film was set partly on the Moon and featured high standard unique impacts. According to conspiracy theorists, the movie was in post-production when NASA approached Kubrick to help them in forging the first three moon landing footage broadcasted from the Moon. The process entailed a real launch and splashdown. However, the spacecraft stayed in earth orbit while the fake footage aired as live from the Moon. The film director confessed that he was contracted to film the fake moon landing by the American government and NASA a few days before succumbing to his death. So it was a fake, fictional, fantasy moon landing. However, there is no evidence to support the theory, which assumes a lot of apparent facts. For one, the film was produced in 2001 which was before to the first Apollo landing. Secondly, the illumination of the moon surface in Kubrick’s movie differs from the first Apollo astronaut movements.[9]

Who Filmed Neil Armstrong Climbing Down the Ladder?

Who Filmed Neil Armstrong Climbing Down the Ladder?

The conspiracy theorist holds on even petty issues such as Neil first step filling to claim that the moon landing was faked. For many, they have questioned or wondered who filmed Neil Armstrong stepping out to the Moon if he was the first man on the Moon. This could be an issue, but it is a minor one to be a conspiracy theory. However, NASA experts were fascinated that this anyone can make a fuss out of such a noon issue. According to them, as Neil descended the ladder to the surface, he stopped to pull the cable. The cable released TV camera that swung from the sides on the Lunar Module to enable the broadcasting of the historic moment worldwide. The recording, according to NASA, one can hear Neil asking the mission control if the pictures were excellent and clear before he continued climbing down.[10]

Letter ‘C’ on the Moon Rock

Letter 'C' on the Moon Rock

Some of the conspiracy theorists cited the presence of labeling and letter C on one of the Moon rocks. The film pops are numbered and lettered so that the stagehands know precisely where to place them. Therefore, the presence of letter C in one of the moon rocks is proof that the moon landing was a hoax. However, another draft asserts that Hollywood pops are marked in this manner; the image in question is cropped from a much large image taken during the Apollo 16 mission. In the original photos, the rock was visible, and there was no letter “C.” The letter only appears in later prints and generations, and no can explain the presence of the C in the first place.[11]
